Our day’s journey began with a severely overcast sky threatening a wild downpour, but luckily it never amounted to much.

The drive took us through the town of Shiprock, within the Navajo Nation reservation. Because of the low-lying clouds, the incredible outcrop called by the same name, and known as the Sacred Mountain of the Navajos, was not clearly visible, but we took a couple of shots of it anyway.

A short drive away was the Four Corners National Monument. This is the only place in the U.S where four states meet, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. To get there we had to travel about 20 miles within Arizona. We stopped at the marker, of course, to take the symbolic picture of being in four states at the same time.

After this obligatory stop, we entered Colorado. Although this has been intended as a strictly New Mexico trip, Mesa Verde is such an amazing place that, being so close to the state line, we could not miss.

I had been at Mesa Verde with Eric, just a few years ago. Gianna, however, had never been. It is not surprising that she was just as in awe of it as I was when I first saw the place.

These cave dwellings (there are several of them), were inhabited over a thousand years ago by Pueblo people, who have since migrated to other places, especially within New Mexico. If you have not been to Mesa Verde, you may consider putting it on your bucket list.

We decided to stay in Colorado for the night and drove along a busy, but very scenic road, to the town of Pagosa Springs, said to be the home of the deepest hot springs in North America.

But we were tired from yet another full day of exploration, so after a yummy Mexican dinner we hit the sack. Must be up quite early in the morning, another fun adventure awaits.
